Loving Them by Helping Them

After a home care assessment has been completed, it is time to decide if in home health care services need to be researched. These services may benefit you and your loved one. The services are many in nature and some are specific, such as in home care, in home health care, home renovation, health equipment, and health equipment rental. We will focus on those home care services to assist you and your loved for an at home stay.

Home Care Agencies

Home health care services was not made known to me until after I had been seeking a home, specifically an apartment with some form of monitoring, for my father. Fortunately, I was able to locate an elderly apartment facility that provided a home for my father, and even served meals daily.

However, you may not be able to visit your loved one as often as you would like. This would be a good opportunity to use a temporary care giver service; one that would "look in" on your loved one from time to time. This type of in home health care services is beneficial.

Without this support service, your loved one may be left to themselves, with no visitor, or someone to assist if they need it. Support services allow you to properly prepare for absences from your family responsibilities, or work responsibilities, to assist with major care issues concerning your loved one. The in home supportive service can be your "extended knowledge and support base".

Home Health Care Agencies

Home health care services are not just in home care providers, but also include home health care providers. Notice the wording here. I have added the words "health care provider". Because of this, the supportive services provided move to the next level. In home health care supportive services describes assistance or services by a medically certified person. Home health care may mean the provision of an at home nurse, doctor or monitoring visit(s). And if your loved one requires some form of medical monitoring, such as for diabetes or heart monitoring, but the distance to provide such services does not "reach their neck of the woods", then you may want to consider telehealth, another facet of home health care services.

Home Renovations

If it is determined that your loved one can stay in their home, or maybe it is decided they move in with you, but the home decided upon requires some sort of renovation, then may I suggest an in home supportive service that is not considered very often - home renovation, or remodeling. The need for a scooter or wheelchair ramp may be necessary, or maybe your loved one does not need the challenge of climbing stairs and a ramp will do the trick. Or as was my case, I had a downstairs bathroom enlarged to accommodate a shower so that my father would not have to climb the stairs to bathe himself. And what of climbing stairs; has there been any thought of a chair lift, or maybe even an elevator?

Home Equipment / Products / Services

And this leads me to another in home supportive service - home health care equipment and rental. Your loved one my require oxygen due to a breathing or blood oxygen transfer issue, then this type of service can provide you with a regularly scheduled delivery, or a reminder when it is time to refill. The equipment may not be so dramatic; maybe a wheelchair is required for a short time period, then the support service can provide this equipment.

All the above are items that need to be taken into account when considering the care of a loved one in the home. It is not enough to conduct an assessment and determine which in home care solution is the best, but one needs to progress to the next level and determine if, and which, in home health care services will be required to make your loved one's stay comfortable, and which in home health care services will make you happy that your loved one is in the best environment with the best care available.
